The Turkey Vultures of Mount Nemo
Among all the creatures Mount Nemo is home to, the one I find the most fascinating is the Turkey Vulture, Cathartes Aura.
With a wingspan of up to 6 feet (2 metres) these birds soar up to 20,000 feet, circle in the air and play on the Escarpment's thermal updrafts, skim the Escarpment face and roost in the trees and on rock ledges.
One trip to Mount Nemo, Rattlesnake, Crawford's Lookout Trail, or Kelso will provide you with an awesome view as they glide in the air or sun themselves on rocks, or in dead birches and cedars.
Below are some photos of Junior, this year's young vulture from the venue I have been watching. There are stills and videos of one nest and one baby from about 6 weeks to 11 weeks when it left the nest.

Some of these pictures are not of "saleable" quality, however, I consider myself  fortunate to get them. It was dark at the base of the Escarpment and even darker in the small cave, and I didn't want to disturb the nest.
This vulture is at best guess 6 weeks old with no "flyin feathers", just a big ball of fluff. It was huddled in with at least one more baby. In a month or so it will be flying.

As you can see, the baby has some feathers, now.
Soon it should be allowed out of its cave.  Based upon observations from previous years it should be around August 25.

It's official. Junior has left the nest. It appears we have 3 juveniles this year: Junior (shown here), and The Twins from another nest 100 metres along the Escarpment. This other nest is most likely on an inaccessible ledge.
Here are 2 views of the cave which hosts the nest.

I'm always interested in speaking with fellow vulture enthusiasts, so please sign the guestbook and leave me your thoughts!
